Sve dok odjednom to više nisu. Jedna objava i sve nestaje…

The List – Yomi Adegoke

“Could they have known that while it was some kind of sick online game to them, her life was ruined? Her relationship was in tatters. Her job was in limbo. Her mental health had been in freefall almost since The List appeared.”

Ola Olajide is a young and popular journalist whose life is in the best period – she is about to marry Michael, the love of her life. The internet loves them. For fans, they are something like the Beckhams. Until suddenly they aren’t anymore. One post and everything disappears…

There is a lot of criticism about the writing and how interesting everything is presented and unfortunately I have to agree with the majority this time. I didn’t like the writing style, it didn’t hold my attention and it was boring at times, but…

BUT the topic is well covered and that’s what made me keep reading. The psychological side of the book is great! That helplessness that the characters feel at the moment when their lives fall apart can be felt more and more with each page. The thought that one click, one post is enough for your life to collapse like a house of cards is terrifying. The power of the internet is terrifying! Information, often unverified and false, that spreads like wildfire, judgment, cancellation, lies – it’s all part of our modern life, something we’re not quite sure how to deal with yet.

I think that this book, although it will not be the best thing you will read this year, still deserves attention precisely because of the subject and that this is where the great value of this book lies.

“When Ola realized that the Llst4 page on Tea was gone, instead of being relieved, she felt robbed. Everyone else could go on with their lives, after they cleaned up their servers. But some people – Lewis, his family, Michael – carried the scars of it all.”
