Ljubavna priča Emme i Dextera započinje 15.srpnja 1988. I nastavlja se idućih dvadeset godina. Dvadeset godina pratimo njihove živote i odnos uvijek na isti dan. Njezin san je pisanje. Njegov san je zabava. No unatoč svim razlikama oni se 15.srpnja 1988. povezuju zauvijek.

One Day – David Nicholls

Emma and Dexter’s love story begins on July 15, 1988 and continues for the next twenty years. For twenty years, we have been following their lives and their relationship, always on the same day. Her dream is to write. His dream is to have fun. But despite all the differences, on July 15, 1988, they are connected forever.

My first encounter with this book was way back in 2011. I was on my honeymoon in London. All bookstores were covered with this book because the movie starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess was being released in those days. That’s when I saw a Kindle for the first time in my life as well, which as a real “gadget freak” I bought immediately after returning to Croatia. Guess what was the first book I bought? 😊

I mostly didn’t remember the plot, except for the bike scene, but even better because I enjoyed it all over again. I love books like this one. These “emotionally damaged” characters are obviously something that really resonates with me. The characters are all over the place, mostly not very likable, but it is written in such a way that you are really interested in how it will end in the end. And in the end, when you turn the last page, you realize that you have come to love them just the way they are, full of flaws.

What I discovered in this reading is how similar Normal People by Sally Rooney is to One Day. I personally don’t mind because I love that book as well, but I was surprised by such a similarity.

I recommend it, especially if you also like Rooney.
