“Reading is a way of life for some customers, the kind of customers who buy more than they read, who behave as though ‘bookworm’ is as inherent as their blood type or their astrological sign.”

Roach je opsjednuta istinitim zločinima i svoje slobodno vrijeme provodi čitajući knjige i slušajući razne podcaste o stvarnim zločinima. Roach ujedno i radi u knjižari gdje između ostalog i prezire sve nove obožavatelje ovoga žanra. U knjižaru stiže Laura čiji je zadatak poboljšati prodaju. Vrlo brzo Roach postaje opsjednuta novom kolegicom.

“no longer a bookseller, no longer a virgin, no longer just a true crime fan. I was an active participant. I was a murderer, a criminal. I was diabolical.

“It’s the words that have power. Somewhere between the ink that’s printed on each page and my understanding of the content is a plain across which my mother’s mind has also wandered, and that landscape exists in every single edition, whether or not it has been touched by my mother’s hand. That’s the power of reading.”

Roach is a true crime-obsessed bookseller who spends her free time reading books and listening to various true crime podcasts. Roach also works in a bookstore where, among other things, she despises all new fans of this genre. Laura arrives at the bookstore with a task to improve sales. Very soon Roach becomes obsessed with her new colleague.

I really liked the plot description, but I didn’t expect the story itself to amaze me so much. The author has created extremely real characters, and the writing style is so vivid that my anxiety level hit the roof. The characters and their relationships are quite disturbing at some moments and the feels you get out of them are not something that will leave your body and soul soon.

I won’t go into details because that way I would completely ruin your experience, but I will just tell you that Roach would have no problem fooling me and creeping into my life. The psychological tension that lasts the whole book and keeps you on the edge of your seat and the shocking ending are made for thriller lovers.
