“I became a skater because I wanted to feel like that. Fierce. Confident. A warrior goddess covered in glitter. So sure of myself, I could make my dreams come true through sheer force of will.”

Katharina Shaw odmalena živi na ledu, sanja olimpijsko zlato i cijeli život posvećuje ostvarenju tog sna. U partneru Heathu Rochi uskoro pronalazi više od osobe s kojom dijeli led…pronalazi ljubav. No iza sjaja medalja kriju se skandali i mračna strana sporta, što ovu priču čini napetom i neodoljivom.

Kao dijete nisam voljela klizati, mrzila sam svu onu zimsku opremu koju me mama tjerala da nosim 😊 Ali umjetničko klizanje? To sam obožavala!

Moguće zato što me knjige koje me oduševe ostave bez riječi. A ova me oduševila!

Volim ovu knjigu, volim priču i stil pisanja, volim snagu likova i borbu koju vode. Ovo nije samo ljubavna priča. Ovo je knjiga puna emocija, strasti i sa savršenim krajem.

A likovi?

The Favorites – Layne Fargo

Katharina Shaw has been living on the ice since she was a child, dreaming of Olympic gold and dedicating her entire life to making that dream come true. In her partner Heath Rocha, she soon finds more than just a person to share the ice with…she finds love. But behind the glitter of medals lie scandals and the dark side of sport, which makes this story tense and irresistible.

As a child, I didn’t like ice skating, I hated all that winter gear my mom made me wear 😊 But figure skating? I loved that! Beautiful costumes, captivating choreography… I remember watching competitions and the Olympics with my mom, and while reading this book, I kept thinking about one skater: Surya Bonaly. The French legend who defied stereotypes and brought strength and originality to a sport that demanded “classic” elegance. The only one who performed the forbidden one-legged backflip at the Olympics! And guess what? Layne Fargo did dedicate this book to her (and if I had read the dedication, I would have figured it out sooner 😊).

I read The Favorites back in November, as soon as the translation arrived, and I don’t know why it took me so long to write a review. Maybe because books that blow me away leave me speechless. And this one blew me away! You don’t have to love ice skating to enjoy the story but trust me, you will by the end of the book.

I love this book, I love the story and the writing style, I love the strength of the characters and the struggle they go through. This is not just a love story. This is a book full of emotions, passion and with a perfect ending.

And the characters? Kat wasn’t my favorite right away, but I grew to love her over time. Heath, on the other hand… I adored him from the very first page!

The Favorites is a beautiful love story and an ode to female strength and figure skating.

I hope you enjoy the world of Kat and Heath as much as I did.

“There are lots of different kinds of love. Love like a steady, warming campfire that keeps you alive in the cold. Love like a raging blaze that burns down everything in its path until nothing but ash remains.”
