The Reappearance of Rachel Price – Holly Jackson

Sixteen years after her mysterious disappearance, Rachel Price suddenly appears – in the middle of filming a documentary about her own disappearance. Her now eighteen-year-old daughter Bel does not believe her mother’s story about where she has been all these years, so she decides to launch her own investigation…

I discovered Holly Jackson through A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series which I loved from the very first book, so I went into this one with high expectations. However, the first hundred or so pages failed to interest me enough – the plot was slow, and my enthusiasm waned. Fortunately, after that initial part, the story gains momentum and I read the rest of the book almost in one breath.

Despite the slow start, The Reappearance of Rachel Price develops into a tense and exciting thriller – a real page-turner. Until the very end, I had no idea who was guilty, who the good and bad characters were, or how it would all end. As usual when I read thrillers, I was completely clueless – it was as if I were a character in the book myself, shocked by the development of events.

As for the characters – I loved Bel! Her grumpy, stubborn personality gave the story extra life and authenticity. Rachel, on the other hand, got on my nerves quite a bit – her behavior and reactions were often irritating. And Carter remained unconvincing – as if she wasn’t developed enough for me to see her as a real person.

Overall, if you enjoyed A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series, you will definitely be interested in this book. Holly Jackson once again confirms that she knows how to write very good thrillers.
