Hokey Pokey – Kate Mascarenhas
In Hokey Pokey, we follow Nora, a psychoanalyst who gets stuck in the Regent Hotel in Birmingham due to a snowstorm. In 1929, hotel guests are having fun drinking cocktails without even suspecting what is lurking in the dark.
My husband bought it on the recommendation of a saleswoman at the Shakespeare’s Company in Paris. He was looking for a cozy mystery because I’m currently crazy about that genre. Hokey Pokey is by no means cozy, but it is one of the best horror/crime stories I’ve read. It is extremely atmospheric, throughout the book you feel the influence of Agatha Christie and her well-known crime stories, but with the addition of horror and the supernatural. The plot is interesting and tense enough that I couldn’t put it down. With vivid and imaginative descriptions, I completely lost myself in the story. I’m realizing more and more how much of a mood reader I really am, because I read it exclusively in the evening, which made the experience even better.
It won me over completely and if you are a fan of these genres be sure to read it!
